Destination Earth
An artistic look at a coronal mass ejection launched towards Earth. The
image is based on data collected by the ESA/NASA SOHO space telescope
and comprises an extreme-ultraviolet image of the Sun’s disc (not to
scale) superimposed on an image of the stormy solar environment. The
scene has been processed using the running difference technique.
This image featured in a SOHO ‘The Sun as Art’ portfolio in 2002 and was highlighted as space science image of the week on 6 May 2013.

The Sun as Art
Caption: This 21-page image set, assembled by SOHO Media
Specialist Steele Hill, presents a new way of looking at the Sun. Its goal is
to highlight the artistic range of colors and shapes and beauty that can be
derived from a little manipulation of SOHO images. In some cases an image has
only been cropped; in some, only color tables were altered; in the most
inventive, pieces have been cut and moved around. At times whimsical and
other times instructive, the presentation tries to suggest the variety and
wonder of the Sun that SOHO has brought to us.
