NASA is hosting a media teleconference at 1 p.m. EDT Tuesday, March 15, to discuss several science investigations launching on the next Orbital ATK commercial resupply flight to the International Space Station.

The briefing participants will be:
  • Marc Fries, principal investigator for Strata-1 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston
  • Aaron Parness, principal investigator for Gecko Grippers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California
  • Matt Napoli, vice president of in-space operations for the Additive Manufacturing Facility for Made In Space in Moffett Field, California
  • Gary Ruff, co-investigator for Saffire at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland
  • Michael Fortenberry, principal investigator for Meteor at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio  

Cygnus is targeted to launch Tuesday, March 22 on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, during a 30-minute launch window that opens at approximately 11 p.m. The spacecraft will carry crew supplies, scientific research and hardware to the orbital laboratory to support the Expedition 47 and 48 crews. 

This launch is the fifth contracted mission by Orbital ATK under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services contract and will be followed later this year by an Orbital ATK resupply mission launching from the agency’s Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Virginia.

La NASA confirmó para el miércoles 8 de enero la puesta en órbita del satélite experimental peruano UAP SAT-1, desde sus plataformas en el centro de lanzamiento espacial Wallops, en el estado de Virginia.

Mediante una comunicación a las autoridades de la Universidad Alas Peruanas (UAP), impulsora del proyecto científico, voceros de la NASA indicaron que el lanzamiento se realizará a las 13:32 horas (tiempo de Perú).
Los ingenieros de la UAP ultiman los detalles de este lanzamiento, el primero que realiza la NASA de un satélite de procedencia peruana y el cual ha sido diseñado exclusivamente por profesionales y estudiantes de dicho centro de estudios.
El satélite ha cumplido todos los estándares y requisitos exigidos por la NASA para su lanzamiento al espacio, según informaron voceros de la UAP.
La puesta en órbita del UAP SAT-1 se efectuará a través del cohete Antares, hecho calificado de un hito por las autoridades de ese centro de estudios, por cuanto situará a Perú como líder y abanderado en América Latina en esta actividad científica.
El cohete Antares llevará al satélite a la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS) en la cápsula espacial Cygnus, tras lo cual será depositado en un brazo robótico que lo pondrá en órbita especial.
De este modo, se culminará un ambicioso proyecto de investigación que data del 2010 y que demandó una inversión de medio millón de dólares.

Misión

Se informó que la misión del UAP SAT-1 –aparato que tiene forma de una caja– será recolectar información sobre el clima en el espacio y lo monitorearán desde un centro de control en la Tierra; aunque no se descarta que le asignen otros trabajos de investigación científica.
El satélite, forrado por delgadas capas de vidrio oscuro y con menos de un kilogramo de peso, tuvo en su tramo final de armado y despegue la labor de seis ingenieros peruanos de la UAP.
El pasado 18 de diciembre se postergó la puesta en órbita del UAP SAT-1 en el centro de lanzamiento espacial Wallops debido a problemas climáticos.

La misión del satélite peruano UAP SAT-1 que este miércoles será puesto en órbita con apoyo de la Administración Nacional de la Aeronáutica y del Espacio de los Estados Unidos (NASA) será recolectar información sobre el clima en el espacio y marcará un hito en el desarrollo aeroespacial y satelital peruano.
Renzo Arévalo, desarrollador del sistema de comunicaciones de UAP, indicó a la Agencia Andina que este equipo permitirá conocer el comportamiento del sistema comunicacional en el espacio. Agregó que no se descarta que le asignen otros trabajos de investigación científica.
Explicó que el satélite es un aparato que tiene forma de una caja y será monitoreado desde un centro de control en la Tierra.
El satélite, forrado por delgadas capas de vidrio oscuro y con menos de un kilogramo de peso, tuvo en su tramo final de armado y despegue la labor de seis ingenieros peruanos de la UAP, indicó.

Expedition 37 crew members aboard the International Space Station released Orbital Sciences' Cygnus spacecraft from the station's robotic arm at 7:31 a.m. EDT on Oct. 22. Orbital Sciences engineers now will conduct a series of planned burns and maneuvers to move Cygnus toward a destructive re-entry in Earth's atmosphere Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Cygnus had been attached to the space station's Harmony module for 23 days. The spacecraft delivered about 1,300 pounds (589 kilograms) of cargo, including food, clothing and student experiments, on a demonstration cargo resupply mission to the station.
Cygnus was launched on Orbital's Antares rocket on Sept. 18 from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport Pad-0A at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

Orbital Sciences Cygnus Spacecraft Departs Space Station, Ends Demonstration Mission for NASA
A cargo resupply demonstration mission by Orbital Sciences Corp. drew to a close Tuesday as Expedition 37 crew members aboard the International Space Station detached and released the Dulles, Va., company's Cygnus spacecraft from the orbiting laboratory.
Cygnus had been attached to the space station's Harmony module for 23 days. The spacecraft delivered about 1,300 pounds (589 kilograms) of cargo, including food, clothing and student experiments. Future Cygnus flights will ensure a robust national capability to deliver critical science research to orbit, significantly increasing NASA's ability to conduct new science investigations to the only laboratory in microgravity.
"Congratulations to the teams at Orbital Sciences and NASA who worked hard to make this demonstration mission to the International Space Station an overwhelming success," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "We are delighted to now have two American companies able to resupply the station. U.S. innovation and inspiration have once again shown their great strength in the design and operation of a new generation of vehicles to carry cargo to our laboratory in space. Orbital's success today is helping make NASA's future exploration to farther destinations possible."
Prior to its departure from the station, Cygnus was loaded with items no longer needed aboard the station. Astronauts Karen Nyberg of NASA and Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency detached the spacecraft using the station's robotic arm and released Cygnus at 7:31 a.m. EDT. Orbital Sciences engineers now will conduct a series of planned burns and maneuvers to move Cygnus toward a destructive re-entry in Earth's atmosphere Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Cygnus was launched Sept. 18 on Orbital's Antares rocket from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport Pad-0A at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
The maiden flight of Cygnus and its 11-day journey to the station included a number of tests designed to demonstrate the spacecraft's ability to navigate, maneuver, lock on to the station and abort its approach. Following these demonstrations NASA cleared the spacecraft to approach the station Sept. 29. Cygnus had been scheduled for a rendezvous with the space station Sept. 22, but because of a data format mismatch, the first rendezvous attempt was postponed. Orbital updated and tested a software patch to resolve the issue.
Orbital built and tested its Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft under NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) Program. NASA initiatives, such as COTS, are helping to develop a robust U.S. commercial space transportation industry with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation to and from low-Earth orbit to meet the needs of both commercial and government customers. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program also is working with commercial partners to enable the availability of U.S. commercial human spaceflight capabilities in the next few years.
The International Space Station is a convergence of science, technology and human innovation that demonstrates new technologies and makes research breakthroughs not possible on Earth. The space station has had crew members continuous on board since November 2000. In that time, it has been visited by more than 200 people and a variety of international and commercial spacecraft. The space station remains the springboard to NASA's next great leap in exploration, including future missions to an asteroid and Mars.

Cygnus Flight Signals the Culmination of NASA’s COTS Program

After a successful launch on Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Orbital Sciences’ Cygnus cargo spacecraft is approaching the International Space Station, signaling the coming completion of NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) Program.

The COTS program began back in 2006 with the vision of acquiring cargo resupply and astronaut transportation services to low-Earth orbit from commercial companies.
Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., built and tested its Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft in partnership with NASA through COTS. NASA initiatives such as COTS are helping to develop a robust U.S. commercial space transportation industry with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation to and from low-Earth orbit to meet the needs of both commercial and government customers. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program also is working with commercial space partners to enable the availability of U.S. commercial human spaceflight capabilities in the next few years.
“This is so critical to NASA to continue to resupply the station, so it can do its amazing discoveries on orbit, and by turning over these capabilities to low-Earth orbit, this is allowing NASA to focus on the more challenging efforts of continuing human exploration into deeper space,” said Alan Lindenmoyer, program manager for NASA’s Commercial Crew and Cargo program at a Sept. 4 news briefing at Johnson Space Center.
The same year as its inception, Space Exploration Technologies of Hawthorne, Calif., (SpaceX) was awarded the first Space Act Agreement under the program. With the completion of their final demonstration flight in 2012, SpaceX began flying supply missions to the space station for NASA.
Orbital Sciences was awarded the second of the program’s Space Act Agreements in 2008 and began work to develop capabilities to fulfill NASA’s vision.
“[NASA] became an investor and a technical advisor with Orbital, and instead of verifying a long list of detailed requirements, we put together a pre-negotiated list of milestones that would serve as our checkpoint throughout the execution of the Space Act Agreement,” Lindenmoyer said at the Sept. 4 news briefing.
After a successful test flight of Orbital’s Antares rocket on Apr. 21, this demonstration flight to the station serves as the first flight of Orbital’s Cygnus cargo spacecraft and the last milestone before the company will be awarded their $1.9M Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract. This contract will buy NASA eight cargo resupply missions from Orbital.
“This is certainly a demonstration not only of the technical capabilities of the system but also of how well we work together with this new way of doing business with public/private partnerships,” Lindenmoyer said at a Sept. 17 news conference at Wallops Flight Facility.
With a successful launch and demonstrations on flight days one and two, the Cygnus spacecraft advances toward the space station where a series of eight demonstration maneuvers and checkouts will be performed including testing of the GPS and targeting systems as well as burn maneuvers that will bring the vehicle underneath the station on Sunday, Sept. 22.
This series of maneuvers and checkouts is standard for any first-time visiting vehicle to station to ensure safety. Tests such as these were performed by SpaceX’s Dragon vehicle as well as international partners’ spacecrafts such as the Japanese HTV.
After Cygnus is cleared of these checkouts and allowed to enter the keep-out zone of the space station, the 200-meter radius surrounding the complex, Cygnus will be captured by the station’s robotic arm. Once captured, it will be berthed and installed into the Harmony module.
NASA Television is scheduled to cover Cygnus’ rendezvous with station beginning at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, continuing through capture and installation of the vehicle.
The day after berthing and installation, Cygnus’ cargo transfer operations onto station will begin. This mission carries vital food, clothing and office supplies to the crew of Expedition 37. Disposal cargo will also be loaded onboard Cygnus.
On Oct. 22, Cygnus will be uninstalled from station and will perform a series of departure maneuvers as part of its milestone requirements. The final objectives will occur approximately two days later with a destructive re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
After approximately seven years, the COTS program will come to completion with the successful end of this Orbital demonstration flight, and NASA will have two commercial companies flying resupply missions to low-Earth orbit.
“[This flight] represents the culmination of the COTS program after many years but not the end of partnerships with industry,” Lindenmoyer said at the Sept. 4 news briefing. “We have great ideas in store for future partnerships with industry. I am confident that the end of this program will open new doors and partnerships to continue in the future.”
