NASA : Chandra Celebrates the International Year of Light .- Telescopio Espacial Chandra, celebra el Año Internacional de la Luz con la visión captada de la explosión de una estrella en la Galaxia Gran Nube de Magallanes...

Hola amigos: A VUELO DE UN QUINDE EL BLOG., hemos recibido de la Agencia Espacial NASA, una espectacular vista  de la explosión masiva de una estrella denominada : SNR 0519-69.0, que sucedió en la Galaxia La Gran Nube de Magallanes, que es una galaxia muy próxima a nuestra Vía Láctea.
Esta maravillosa vista captada por los telescopios de NASA, nos enriquecen la celebración del Año Internacional de la Luz, y las Tecnologías basadas en la Luz;  proclamado por las Naciones Unidos  el 19 de enero del 2015.

 
Chandra Celebrates the International Year of Light
The year of 2015 has been declared the International Year of Light (IYL) by the United Nations. Organizations, institutions, and individuals involved in the science and applications of light will be joining together for this yearlong celebration to help spread the word about the wonders of light.
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory explores the universe in X-rays, a high-energy form of light.  By studying X-ray data and comparing them with observations in other types of light, scientists can develop a better understanding of objects likes stars and galaxies that generate temperatures of millions of degrees and produce X-rays.
To recognize the start of IYL, the Chandra X-ray Center is releasing a set of images that combine data from telescopes tuned to different wavelengths of light. From a distant galaxy to the relatively nearby debris field of an exploded star, these images demonstrate the myriad ways that information about the universe is communicated to us through light.
In this image, an expanding shell of debris called SNR 0519-69.0 is left behind after a massive star exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy to the Milky Way. Multimillion degree gas is seen in X-rays from Chandra, in blue. The outer edge of the explosion (red) and stars in the field of view are seen in visible light from the Hubble Space Telescope.

To celebrate the International Year of Light, five Chandra images (M51, SNR E0519-69.0, MSH 11-62, Cygnus A, and RCW 86) have been released.

In many ways, astronomy uses the science of light.  By building telescopes that can detect light in its many forms, from radio waves on one end of the “electromagnetic spectrum” to gamma rays on the other, scientists can get a better understanding of the processes at work in the Universe.
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory explores the Universe in X-rays, a high-energy form of light.  By studying X-ray data and comparing them with observations in other types of light, scientists can develop a better understanding of objects likes stars and galaxies that generate temperatures of millions of degrees and produce X-rays.
To recognize the start of IYL, the Chandra X-ray Center is releasing a set of images that combine data from telescopes tuned to different wavelengths of light. From a distant galaxy to the relatively nearby debris field of an exploded star, these images demonstrate the myriad ways that information about the Universe is communicated to us through light.
The images, beginning at the upper left and moving clockwise, are:  
Messier 51 (M51): This galaxy, nicknamed the “Whirlpool,” is a spiral galaxy, like our Milky Way, located about 30 million light years from Earth. This composite image combines data collected at X-ray wavelengths by Chandra (purple), ultraviolet by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX, blue); visible light by Hubble (green), and infrared by Spitzer (red).
SNR 0519-69.0: When a massive star exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy to the Milky Way, it left behind an expanding shell of debris called SNR 0519-69.0. Here, multimillion degree gas is seen in X-rays from Chandra (blue).  The outer edge of the explosion (red) and stars in the field of view are seen in visible light from Hubble.
MSH 11-62: When X-rays, shown in blue, from Chandra and XMM-Newton are joined in this image with radio data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (pink) and visible light data from the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS, yellow), a new view of the region emerges. This object, known as MSH 11-62, contains an inner nebula of charged particles that could be an outflow from the dense spinning core left behind when a massive star exploded.
RCW 86: This supernova remnant is the remains of an exploded star that may have been witnessed by Chinese astronomers almost 2,000 years ago. Modern telescopes have the advantage of observing this object in light that is completely invisible to the unaided human eye. This image combines X-rays from Chandra (pink and blue) along with visible emission from hydrogen atoms in the rim of the remnant, observed with the 0.9-m Curtis Schmidt telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (yellow).
Cygnus A: This galaxy, at a distance of some 700 million light years, contains a giant bubble filled with hot, X-ray emitting gas detected by Chandra (blue). Radio data from the NSF’s Very Large Array (red) reveal “hot spots” about 300,000 light years out from the center of the galaxy where powerful jets emanating from the galaxy’s supermassive black hole end. Visible light data (yellow) from both Hubble and the DSS complete this view.
In addition to these newly released images, the Chandra X-ray Center has created a new online repository of images called “Light: Beyond the Bulb” for IYL. This project places astronomical objects in context with light in other fields of science and research.
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, manages the Chandra program for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, controls Chandra's science and flight operations.

nsf.gov - National Science Foundation - Spotlight on light .- Enfoque en la luz

Hola amigos: A VUELO DE UN QUINDE EL BLOG., hemos recibido una bellísima fotografía de la Luz; en proyección  en el Año Internacional de la Luz de las Naciones Unidas en París. el Lunes 19 de enero; de la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias de Los Estados Unidos de América.
NSF. nos dice : "...Año Internacional de la Luz de las Naciones Unidas se puso en marcha en la Ciudad de la Luz (París, Francia) el lunes, y la Directora Francia Córdova  de la Fundación Nacional de Ciencia (NSF) estaba allí para iluminar el papel de la NSF en abrazar las muchas facetas de la luz que impulsan los descubrimientos científicos hacia adelante..."
NSF, agrega : "...."La luz ha sido y seguirá siendo un campo convincente de la investigación básica y la educación cruzar muchas fronteras disciplinarias", dijo en su discurso. "En la economía global de hoy, creemos que es importante fomentar una fuerza de trabajo científico y de ingeniería capaz de realizar con éxito en un entorno de investigación internacional.."

La luz es vital para las actividades humanas. En la naturaleza, vemos sus efectos en la fotosíntesis y la bioluminiscencia. Lo utilizamos para recoger información acerca de nuestro universo desde el sol y las estrellas. International Year of Light celebrates impacts on scientific research

The United Nations' International Year of Light was launched in the City of Light (Paris, France) on Monday, and National Science Foundation (NSF) Director France Córdova was there to illuminate NSF's role in embracing the many facets of light that propel scientific discovery forward.
"Light has been and will continue to be a compelling field of basic research and education crossing many disciplinary boundaries," she said in her remarks. "In today's global economy, we believe it is important to nurture a scientific and engineering workforce capable of successfully performing in an international research environment."
Light is vital to human activities. In nature, we see its impacts in photosynthesis and bioluminescence. We use it to glean information about our universe from the sun and stars. Scientists and engineers have harnessed the power of light on many spectrums to create applications that have revolutionized society through medicine, communications, entertainment and culture. Light and light-based technologies have launched countless industries and processes that have transformed our world and will continue to do so.
NSF has a long history of supporting research in optics and photonics as well as projects that use them as research tools. That effort is expanding to move beyond present science and technology and lay the groundwork for major advances in scientific understanding to create high-impact, optical-based technologies for the next decade and beyond.
Some NSF-funded research in these areas includes:
  • A new photonic electronics platform paradigm;
  • Extreme UV and x-ray sources that represent new frontiers in research;
  • Science and engineering in the quantum realm;
  • Biophotonics, which sits at the crossroads of photonics and biology, offering potential innovation for health care and medicine; and
  • Manufacturing innovations.
"The innate desire for discovery lies at the heart of the National Science Foundation, where we constantly seek to unlock the secrets of science," Córdova said. "We are proud to be one of the world's leading funders of research into all aspects of light in all its manifestations, across the entire electromagnetic spectrum."
Because of NSF's involvement in optics, photonics, and all manner of scientific inquiry into naturally occurring and human-made light sources, the agency will highlight NSF-funded light research throughout the coming year to celebrate the International Year of Light, starting with an "image of the week" feature in its social media platforms and on its website.
