Dr. George Carruthers, right, and William Conway, a project manager at the Naval Research Institute, examine the gold-plated ultraviolet camera/spectrograph, the first moon-based observatory that Carruthers developed for the Apollo 16 mission. Working for the Naval Research Laboratory, Carruthers had three years earlier received a patent for a Far Ultraviolet Electrographic Camera, which obtained images in electromagnetic radiation in short wavelengths.
Apollo 16 astronauts placed the observatory on the moon in April 1972, where it sits today on the moon’s Descartes highland region, in the shadow of the lunar module Orion. Asked to explain highlights of the instrument's findings for a general audience, Dr. Carruthers said "the most immediately obvious and spectacular results were really for the Earth observations, because this was the first time that the Earth had been photographed from a distance in ultraviolet light, so that you could see the full extent of the hydrogen atmosphere, the polar auroris and what we call the tropical airglow belt."
Dr. Carruthers made the first detection of molecular hydrogen in space, in 1970, using a sounding rocket. He developed a rocket instrument that obtained an ultraviolet image of Comet Halley, and an instrument with two cameras, with different far-UV wavelength sensitivities, used on the STS-39 space shuttle mission in 1991. He has worked on UV imaging of Earth’s polar auroras and of the faint photochemical luminescence found in the upper atmosphere, with an instrument, Global Imaging Monitor of the Ionosphere (GIMI), on a Department of Defense satellite, the Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite (ARGOS), launched in 1999. In 2012, he was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the nation's highest honor for technology achievement.

Astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr., in his silver pressure suit with the helmet visor closed, prepares for his Mercury Redstone 3 launch on May 5, 1961. Shepard's Freedom 7 Mercury capsule lifted off at 9:34 a.m. from Launch Complex 5 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and flew a suborbital trajectory lasting 15 minutes and 22 seconds. He became the first American to fly into space.
During the rocket's acceleration, Shepard was subjected to 6.3 g, or 6.3 times his normal weight, just before shut down of the Redstone engine, two minutes and 22 seconds after liftoff. Soon after, America's first space traveler got his first view of the Earth. "What a beautiful view," Shepard said. His spacecraft splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, 302 miles from Cape Canaveral, where he and Freedom 7 were recovered by helicopter and transported to the awaiting aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain.

Hola amigos: A VUELO DE UN QUINDE EL BLOG., El 14 de abril de 1981, las ruedas traseras del transbordador espacial Columbia tocaron tierra en el lago seco Rogers en la Base Edwards de la Fuerza Aérea, Centro de la NASA Armstrong Investigación de Vuelo (entonces Dryden Flight Research Center), en el sur de California, para completar con éxito una estancia en espacio de más de dos días. Los astronautas John W. Young, comandante de la misión STS-1, y Robert L. Crippen, piloto, estaban a bordo del vehículo. La misión marcó el primer vuelo de la NASA para terminar con un aterrizaje con ruedas y representó el comienzo de una nueva era de vuelos espaciales que emplean el mismo hardware de forma repetida.
Un área de la base aérea se reservó para la exhibición pública del aterrizaje, y las multitudes contados más de 200.000 personas, con algunas estimaciones de hasta 300.000 visitantes que acudieron al sitio. Los medios de comunicación de todo el mundo añade a la multitud, como radio y televisión camiones de todos los tamaños y formas enrolladas de todas partes.
James Young, Historiador Jefe del Centro de Ensayos en Vuelo de la Fuerza Aérea en la Base Aérea Edwards, recordaba bien el aterrizaje. "Sólo había que estar allí para escuchar, incluso sentir, la doble rendija de la explosión sónica", dijo Young. Shuttle Columbia landing on dry lake bed
On April 14, 1981, the rear wheels of the space shuttle orbiter Columbia touched down on Rogers dry lake at Edwards Air Force Base, NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center (then Dryden Flight Research Center), in southern California, to successfully complete a stay in space of more than two days. Astronauts John W. Young, STS-1 commander, and Robert L. Crippen, pilot, were aboard the vehicle. The mission marked the first NASA flight to end with a wheeled landing and represented the beginning of a new age of spaceflight that would employ the same hardware repeatedly.
An area of the air base was set aside for public viewing of the landing, and crowds numbered well over 200,000 people, with some estimates as high as 300,000 visitors who flocked to the site. Media from around the world added to the throng, as radio and TV trucks of all shapes and sizes rolled in from everywhere.
James Young, Chief Historian of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, remembered the landing well. "You just had to be there to hear, even feel, the double crack of the sonic boom," Young said. "It was such a tremendous sense of excitement to see something never seen before, to witness such a historic event."

Twenty-five years ago, NASA launched the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, an astronomical satellite that transformed our knowledge of the high-energy sky. Over its nine-year lifetime, Compton produced the first-ever all-sky survey in gamma rays, the most energetic and penetrating form of light, discovered hundreds of new sources and unveiled a universe that was unexpectedly dynamic and diverse.
 
In this view, taken on April 7, 1991, from the aft flight deck window of space shuttle Atlantis, the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is released by the shuttle's remote manipulator system. Visible on the observatory as it drifts away are the four complement instruments: the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment (bottom); Imaging Compton Telescope (COMPTEL) (center); Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) (top); and Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) (at four corners).

El 16 de marzo de 1966, piloto comandante Neil Armstrong y el piloto David Scott acopló con éxito su nave espacial Gemini VIII con el vehículo objetivo Agena, el primer vinculación de dos naves espaciales juntos en la órbita terrestre. Este hito fundamental la tecnología de vuelos espaciales que sería vital para el éxito de futuras misiones de alunizaje. Ponerse al día con ya en órbita la nave espacial también ha sido esencial durante las misiones a la Estación Espacial Internacional.

Target docking vehicle approaches Gemini spacecraft
On March 16, 1966, command pilot Neil Armstrong and pilot David Scott successfully docked their Gemini VIII spacecraft with the Agena target vehicle, the first-ever linking of two spacecraft together in Earth orbit. This crucial spaceflight technology milestone would prove vital to the success of future moon landing missions. Catching up with already-orbiting spacecraft also has been essential during missions to the International Space Station.
 
The astronauts aboard the Gemini spacecraft took this side view photograph of the Agena target vehicle at a distance of 45 feet during an inspection prior to docking. The two spacecraft were in the third orbit of the mission, above the west coast of Mexico.
 
Because of problems with the Gemini spacecraft control system, the crew was forced to undock after approximately 30 minutes, as the spacecraft-target vehicle combination had begun to encounter increasing yaw and roll rates. The crew regained control of their spacecraft by using the reentry control system (RCS), and the decision was made in Mission Control to follow mission rules that dictated once the RCS was activated, the crew must be brought home. The Gemini VIII landed early in a secondary landing area in the Pacific, splashing down within two miles of the predicted impact point 10 hours, 41 minutes after liftoff.

NASA : Historic Formation Flight of NASA's WB-57s Over Houston .- Histórica Formación Vuelo de WB-57 de la NASA sobre Houston

Hola amigos: A VUELO DE UN QUINDE EL BLOG., Tres WB-57 de la NASA vuelan sobre la ciudad de niebla Houston, Texas durante su vuelo en formación histórica sobre la zona el 19 de noviembre de 2015. Este vuelo foto era la primera vez que los tres WB-57 han sido en alto de forma simultánea desde principios de 1970, cuando la Fuerza Aérea de Estados Unidos tenía un escuadrón operacional de BM-57s.
Estos pleno funcionamiento aviones WB-57 se basa cerca del Centro Espacial Johnson de la NASA en Ellington Field, sede del Programa de Investigación de la NASA WB-57 High Altitude, que ofrece único, de gran altitud plataformas aéreas para apoyar la investigación científica y el desarrollo de tecnología avanzada y pruebas. Ejemplos Misión incluyen ciencias de la atmósfera y la tierra, la cartografía del suelo, recolección de polvo cósmico, de apoyo al lanzamiento de cohetes, y las operaciones de banco de pruebas para los futuros sistemas de a bordo o de vehículos espaciales.

NASA's three WB-57s fly over foggy downtown Houston, Texas during their historic formation flight over the area on Nov. 19, 2015. This photo flight was the first time that all three WB-57s have been aloft simultaneously since the early 1970s, when the U.S. Air Force had an operational squadron of WB-57s.
These fully operational WB-57 aircraft are based near NASA's Johnson Space Center at Ellington Field, home of the NASA WB-57 High Altitude Research Program, which provides unique, high-altitude airborne platforms to support scientific research and advanced technology development and testing. Mission examples include atmospheric and earth science, ground mapping, cosmic dust collection, rocket launch support, and testbed operations for future airborne or spaceborne systems.
