Unesco declares Danza de las Tijeras as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity:
Nairobi, Nov. 16 (ANDINA). Danza de las Tijeras (scissors dance) and La Huaconada, a ritual dance currently performed in the town of Mito, in the Mantaro Valley, were included in the Representative List of the Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, on Tuesday during a meeting taking place in the city of Nairobi, Kenya.
The information was confirmed to Andina News Agency by Unesco’s Division of Public Information, headquartered in France.
Danza de las Tijeras' dossier was submitted by Peru’s National Institute of Culture after working together with the Association of Scissors’ Dancers and Musicians of Peru (representing Ayacucho and Apurimac regions) and the Folk Association of Scissors’ Dancers of Huancavelica.
The Danza de las Tijeras (scissors dance) is an original dance from the Andes, in which two or more dancers show their physical dexterity and elasticity. They dance in turns, doing explicit movements and challenging steps, such as dancing with one foot.
The scissors dance gets its name from the two independent pieces of steel the dancers hold in their right hands in the style of scissors.
La Huaconada is a celebration that parodies justice in Mito, located in the city of Huancayo in Junin department. Visitors and tourists dance with the huaynos music, and they go around the whole village.
