Engineers around the country are making progress developing NASA’s Space Launch System, Orion spacecraft and the ground systems at Kennedy Space Center in Florida needed to send astronauts on missions to deep space destinations. Between July and September, progress continued as pieces of Orion’s crew module and the SLS core stage tanks were welded together at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, modifications were made to the mobile launcher at Kennedy, astronauts tested techniques for exiting Orion after a mission, and an RS-25 engine was tested at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

"Un Gran Salto Para la Humanidad"
48 Aniversario de la Llegada del Hombre a la Luna


20.07.17.- Hace 48 años, la humanidad consiguió un importante logro: que un hombre pisase la Luna por primera vez. Todo comenzó el 25 de Mayo de 1961, cuando el Presidente de los Estados Unidos John F. Kennedy anunció su intención de poder enviar astronautas a la Luna antes de que finalizase la década. Esto sucedió tres semanas después de que el astronauta Alan Shepard se convirtiese en el primer americano en viajar al espacio. Ocho años de duro trabajo tendrían que pasar antes de que la NASA viese cumplido su gran proyecto de poner un hombre en la Luna con el vuelo del Apolo XI.

El 16 de Julio de 1969 la nave, propulsada por un cohete Saturno V, despegaba desde el Complejo 39A del Centro Espacial Kennedy en Florida. Llevaba a bordo a los astronautas Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin y Michael Collins. A las 9:32 de la mañana, hora local, el enorme cohete se elevaba sobre el cielo de Florida y 12 minutos después la tripulación entraba en órbita.
Después de cuatro días de viaje y tras abandonar la órbita terrestre y entrar en la lunar, Armstrong y Aldrin pasaron al módulo lunar, llamado Águila, mientras que Collins permanecía en el Módulo de mando Columbia. El Águila se separó del Módulo de mando y comenzó a descender para posarse en la superficie de la Luna, en una zona denominada Mar de la Tranquilidad.


Tras unas horas destinadas a igualar la presión del módulo lunar con la de la Luna, ambos astronautas se dispusieron a poner pie en la superficie selenita. El primero en pisarla fue Neil Armstrong, el 20 de Julio a las 10:56 hora de Florida, ante la mirada de millones de personas alrededor de todo el mundo, que observaron este histórico acontecimiento a través de la televisión. Mientras descendía por la escalera del módulo, Armstrong proclamó la famosa frase: "Este es un pequeño paso para el hombre, pero un gran salto para la humanidad".
Posteriormente Aldrin (imagen izda.), se unió a él ofreciendo una simple pero poderosa descripción de la superficie lunar: "Magnífica desolación". Una vez que ambos astronautas ya se encontraban sobre suelo lunar, comenzaron a realizar las tareas que les habían sido asignadas.

Tomaron fotografías, manejaron una cámara de televisión (gracias a la cual los espectadores de todo el mundo pudimos asistir a sus hazañas), colocaron una bandera de los Estados Unidos y depositaron una placa metálica con la siguiente inscripción: "Aquí los hombres del planeta Tierra han puesto el pie sobre la Luna por primera vez. Julio de 1969 D.C. Hemos venido en paz en nombre de toda la humanidad".
Después realizaron actividades científicas: instalaron un reflector de rayos láser destinado a medir con exactitud la distancia entre la Tierra y la Luna, un sismógrafo para registrar terremotos lunares y una pantalla para medir la intensidad del viento solar.
Por otra parte, mediante picos y palas los astronautas recogieron arena y fragmentos de rocas lunares para traerlas a la Tierra. Tras descansar en el Águila, Armstrong y Aldrin realizaron otra salida lunar, en esta ocasión para recorrer y explorar parte de la zona en la que habían alunizado. Transcurrida esta misión, volvieron al módulo lunar que reemprendió el viaje para unirse con el módulo de mando donde les esperaba Collins.

Quedaba en la superficie lunar la plataforma de frenado del Águila, nave que fue abandonada una vez que los astronautas hubieron pasado al Columbia, con el cual iniciaron el viaje de regreso a la Tierra. La hazaña espacial finalizó cuando el módulo de mando cayó en aguas del Océano Pacífico, no lejos de Hawai el 24 de Julio.

Los astronautas tuvieron que someterse a una cuarentena, ya que podía darse la posibilidad, en realidad remota, de que hubieran traído algún germen desconocido de la Luna. Mientras tanto, las muestras de rocas lunares eran estudiadas por los científicos.

Los análisis quimicofísicos y cristalográficos revelaron que se trataba de materiales idénticos a los que se encuentran en la Tierra en rocas ígneas (resultantes de fusiones) y en los meteoros. No se encontró ningún elemento biológico, lo cual confirmaba la inexistencia de cualquier forma de vida pasada o presente en la Luna. La elaboración de los datos de distintos análisis muestra que la Luna, al igual que la Tierra, tiene una constitución en estratos, y que en un tiempo estuvo en estado fluido, al igual que se encontraba nuestro planeta hace 4500 millones de años.
Con la Misión del Apolo XI el desafío del Presidente Kennedy se había conseguido. Los hombres de la Tierra habían caminado sobre la superficie de la Luna y habían regresado sanos y salvos a casa.

July 1969. It's a little over eight years since the flights of Gagarin and Shepard, followed quickly by President Kennedy's challenge to put a man on the moon before the decade is out.

It is only seven months since NASA's made a bold decision to send Apollo 8 all the way to the moon on the first manned flight of the massive Saturn V rocket.

Now, on the morning of July 16, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins sit atop another Saturn V at Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. The three-stage 363-foot rocket will use its 7.5 million pounds of thrust to propel them into space and into history.

At 9:32 a.m. EDT, the engines fire and Apollo 11 clears the tower. About 12 minutes later, the crew is in Earth orbit. (› Play Audio)

After one and a half orbits, Apollo 11 gets a "go" for what mission controllers call "Translunar Injection" - in other words, it's time to head for the moon. Three days later the crew is in lunar orbit. A day after that, Armstrong and Aldrin climb into the lunar module Eagle and begin the descent, while Collins orbits in the command module Columbia. Collins later writes that Eagle is "the weirdest looking contraption I have ever seen in the sky," but it will prove its worth.

When it comes time to set Eagle down in the Sea of Tranquility, Armstrong improvises, manually piloting the ship past an area littered with boulders. During the final seconds of descent, Eagle's computer is sounding alarms.

It turns out to be a simple case of the computer trying to do too many things at once, but as Aldrin will later point out, "unfortunately it came up when we did not want to be trying to solve these particular problems."

When the lunar module lands at 4:18 p.m EDT, only 30 seconds of fuel remain. Armstrong radios "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Mission control erupts in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew "You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again." (› Play Audio)

Armstrong will later confirm that landing was his biggest concern, saying "the unknowns were rampant," and "there were just a thousand things to worry about."

At 10:56 p.m. EDT Armstrong is ready to plant the first human foot on another world. With more than half a billion people watching on television, he climbs down the ladder and proclaims: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." (› Play Audio)

Aldrin joins him shortly, and offers a simple but powerful description of the lunar surface: "magnificent desolation." They explore the surface for two and a half hours, collecting samples and taking photographs.

They leave behind an American flag, a patch honoring the fallen Apollo 1 crew, and a plaque on one of Eagle's legs. It reads, "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

Armstrong and Aldrin blast off and dock with Collins in Columbia. Collins later says that "for the first time," he "really felt that we were going to carry this thing off."

The crew splashes down off Hawaii on July 24. Kennedy's challenge has been met. Men from Earth have walked on the moon and returned safely home.

In an interview years later, Armstrong praises the "hundreds of thousands" of people behind the project. "Every guy that's setting up the tests, cranking the torque wrench, and so on, is saying, man or woman, 'If anything goes wrong here, it's not going to be my fault.'" In a post-flight press conference, Armstrong calls the flight "a beginning of a new age," while Collins talks about future journeys to Mars.

Over the next three and a half years, 10 astronauts will follow in their footsteps. Gene Cernan, commander of the last Apollo mission leaves the lunar surface with these words: "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace, and hope for all mankind."

On July 16, 1969, the huge, 363-feet tall Saturn V rocket launches on the Apollo 11 mission from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center, at 9:32 a.m. EDT. Onboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft are astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot. Apollo 11 was the United States' first lunar landing mission. While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the Lunar Module "Eagle" to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the moon, astronaut Collins remained with the Command and Service Modules "Columbia" in lunar orbit.

Todavía existen escépticos que creen que todo fue un montaje, que era imposible que el hombre pisara la Luna, que todos los vídeos que mostró la NASA fueron grabados en un plató y que incluso el mismísimo Stanley Kubrick fue el encargado de dirigir las grabaciones. Disparates sin ningún fundamento que han sido refutados y explicados en múltiples ocasiones, tanto por la propia agencia espacial estadounidense como por científicos independientes de todo el mundo. Ni siquiera merece la pena discutir sobre si el Hombre llegó a la Luna o no.
El comandante Neil Armstrong se convirtió en el primer ser humano que pisó la superficie lunar, el 21 de julio de 1969 a las 2:56 (hora internacional UTC). Y desde entonces pocos más han tenido este privilegio. Exactamente 12 personas han sido las que han podido plantar su huella sobre la Luna y ser los humanos que más lejos han estado del planeta que les vio nacer. Sus nombres: Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, Charles Conrad, Alan L. Bean, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchel, David Scott, James B. Irwin, John W. Young, Charles M. Duke, Eugene A. Cernan y Harrison H. Schmitt.

    NASA's Apollo 11 crew landed on the moon July 20, 1969. The world watched 45 years ago as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set their lunar module Eagle down in the Sea of Tranquility, while crewmate Michael Collins orbited above in the command module Columbia.

    The agency will commemorate Armstrong's "one giant leap for mankind" through a number of events across, and above, the United States during the next two weeks, as well as on the agency's website and NASA Television.
    On Friday, July 18 at 1:30 p.m. EDT, NASA TV will air a discussion about the future of space exploration between scientists and actor, director, and narrator Morgan Freeman, live from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. The event also will include NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman participating from the International Space Station.
    Also on Friday at 3:30 p.m., NASA will host a discussion with Buzz Aldrin and astronaut Mike Massimino at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York during the Intrepid Space and Science Festival. NASA also will have exhibits and activities at the festival Thursday, July 17 - Saturday, July 19. For more information about the festival, visit
    On Sunday, July 20 at 10:39 p.m., when Armstrong opened the spacecraft hatch to begin the first spacewalk on the moon, NASA TV will replay the restored footage of Armstrong and Aldrin's historic steps on the lunar surface.
    On Monday, July 21 at 10 a.m. from the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA TV will air live coverage of the renaming of the center's Operations and Checkout Building in honor of Armstrong, who passed away in 2012. The renaming ceremony will include NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Kennedy Center Director Robert Cabana, Apollo 11’s Collins, Aldrin and astronaut Jim Lovell, who was the mission’s back-up commander. International Space Station NASA astronauts Wiseman and Steve Swanson, who is the current station commander, also will take part in the ceremony from their orbiting laboratory 260 miles above Earth.
    Kennedy's Operations and Checkout Building has played a vital role in NASA’s spaceflight history. It was used during the Apollo program to process and test the command, service and lunar modules. Today, the facility is being used to process and assemble NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which the agency will use to send astronauts to an asteroid in the 2020s and Mars in the 2030s. 
    On Thursday, July 24 at 6 p.m. EDT, which is the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11's return to Earth, the agency will host a panel discussion -- called NASA’s Next Giant Leap -- from Comic-Con International in San Diego, California. Moderated by actor Seth Green, the panel includes Aldrin, NASA Planetary Science Division Director Jim Green, JPL systems engineer Bobak Ferdowsi, and NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, who will talk about Orion and the Space Launch System rocket, which will carry humans on America’s next great adventure in space.

    The primary objective of Apollo 11 was to complete a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961: perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth.

    Additional flight objectives included scientific exploration by the lunar module, or LM, crew; deployment of a television camera to transmit signals to Earth; and deployment of a solar wind composition experiment, seismic experiment package and a Laser Ranging Retroreflector. During the exploration, the two astronauts were to gather samples of lunar-surface materials for return to Earth. They also were to extensively photograph the lunar terrain, the deployed scientific equipment, the LM spacecraft, and each other, both with still and motion picture cameras. This was to be the last Apollo mission to fly a "free-return" trajectory, which would enable, if necessary, a ready abort of the mission when the combined command and service module/lunar module, or CSM/LM, prepared for insertion into lunar orbit. The trajectory would occur by firing the service propulsion subsystem, or SPS, engine so as to merely circle behind the moon and emerge in a trans-Earth return trajectory.

    Mission Highlights
    Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, carrying Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin into an initial Earth-orbit of 114 by 116 miles. An estimated 530 million people watched Armstrong's televised image and heard his voice describe the event as he took "...one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" on July 20, 1969.

    Two hours, 44 minutes and one-and-a-half revolutions after launch, the S-IVB stage reignited for a second burn of five minutes, 48 seconds, placing Apollo 11 into a translunar orbit. The command and service module, or CSM, Columbia separated from the stage, which included the spacecraft-lunar module adapter, or SLA, containing the lunar module, or LM, Eagle. After transposition and jettisoning of the SLA panels on the S-IVB stage, the CSM docked with the LM. The S-IVB stage separated and injected into heliocentric orbit four hours, 40 minutes into the flight.

    The first color TV transmission to Earth from Apollo 11 occurred during the translunar coast of the CSM/LM. Later, on July 17, a three-second burn of the SPS was made to perform the second of four scheduled midcourse corrections programmed for the flight. The launch had been so successful that the other three were not needed.

    On July 18, Armstrong and Aldrin put on their spacesuits and climbed through the docking tunnel from Columbia to Eagle to check out the LM, and to make the second TV transmission.

    On July 19, after Apollo 11 had flown behind the moon out of contact with Earth, came the first lunar orbit insertion maneuver. At about 75 hours, 50 minutes into the flight, a retrograde firing of the SPS for 357.5 seconds placed the spacecraft into an initial, elliptical-lunar orbit of 69 by 190 miles. Later, a second burn of the SPS for 17 seconds placed the docked vehicles into a lunar orbit of 62 by 70.5 miles, which was calculated to change the orbit of the CSM piloted by Collins. The change happened because of lunar-gravity perturbations to the nominal 69 miles required for subsequent LM rendezvous and docking after completion of the lunar landing. Before this second SPS firing, another TV transmission was made, this time from the surface of the moon.

    On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin entered the LM again, made a final check, and at 100 hours, 12 minutes into the flight, the Eagle undocked and separated from Columbia for visual inspection. At 101 hours, 36 minutes, when the LM was behind the moon on its 13th orbit, the LM descent engine fired for 30 seconds to provide retrograde thrust and commence descent orbit insertion, changing to an orbit of 9 by 67 miles, on a trajectory that was virtually identical to that flown by Apollo 10. At 102 hours, 33 minutes, after Columbia and Eagle had reappeared from behind the moon and when the LM was about 300 miles uprange, powered descent initiation was performed with the descent engine firing for 756.3 seconds. After eight minutes, the LM was at "high gate" about 26,000 feet above the surface and about five miles from the landing site.

    The descent engine continued to provide braking thrust until about 102 hours, 45 minutes into the mission. Partially piloted manually by Armstrong, the Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility in Site 2 at 0 degrees, 41 minutes, 15 seconds north latitude and 23 degrees, 26 minutes east longitude. This was about four miles downrange from the predicted touchdown point and occurred almost one-and-a-half minutes earlier than scheduled. It included a powered descent that ran a mere nominal 40 seconds longer than preflight planning due to translation maneuvers to avoid a crater during the final phase of landing. Attached to the descent stage was a commemorative plaque signed by President Richard M. Nixon and the three astronauts.

    The flight plan called for the first EVA to begin after a four-hour rest period, but it was advanced to begin as soon as possible. Nonetheless, it was almost four hours later that Armstrong emerged from the Eagle and deployed the TV camera for the transmission of the event to Earth. At about 109 hours, 42 minutes after launch, Armstrong stepped onto the moon. About 20 minutes later, Aldrin followed him. The camera was then positioned on a tripod about 30 feet from the LM. Half an hour later, President Nixon spoke by telephone link with the astronauts.

    Commemorative medallions bearing the names of the three Apollo 1 astronauts who lost their lives in a launch pad fire, and two cosmonauts who also died in accidents, were left on the moon's surface. A one-and-a-half inch silicon disk, containing micro miniaturized goodwill messages from 73 countries, and the names of congressional and NASA leaders, also stayed behind.

    During the EVA, in which they both ranged up to 300 feet from the Eagle, Aldrin deployed the Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package, or EASEP, experiments, and Armstrong and Aldrin gathered and verbally reported on the lunar surface samples. After Aldrin had spent one hour, 33 minutes on the surface, he re-entered the LM, followed 41 minutes later by Armstrong. The entire EVA phase lasted more than two-and-a-half hours, ending at 111 hours, 39 minutes into the mission.

    Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21 hours, 36 minutes on the moon's surface. After a rest period that included seven hours of sleep, the ascent stage engine fired at 124 hours, 22 minutes. It was shut down 435 seconds later when the Eagle reached an initial orbit of 11 by 55 miles above the moon, and when Columbia was on its 25th revolution. As the ascent stage reached apolune at 125 hours, 19 minutes, the reaction control system, or RCS, fired so as to nearly circularize the Eagle orbit at about 56 miles, some 13 miles below and slightly behind Columbia. Subsequent firings of the LM RCS changed the orbit to 57 by 72 miles. Docking with Columbia occurred on the CSM's 27th revolution at 128 hours, three minutes into the mission. Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the CSM with Collins. Four hours later, the LM jettisoned and remained in lunar orbit.

    Trans-Earth injection of the CSM began July 21 as the SPS fired for two-and-a-half minutes when Columbia was behind the moon in its 59th hour of lunar orbit. Following this, the astronauts slept for about 10 hours. An 11.2 second firing of the SPS accomplished the only midcourse correction required on the return flight. The correction was made July 22 at about 150 hours, 30 minutes into the mission. Two more television transmissions were made during the trans-Earth coast.

    Re-entry procedures were initiated July 24, 44 hours after leaving lunar orbit. The SM separated from the CM, which was re-oriented to a heat-shield-forward position. Parachute deployment occurred at 195 hours, 13 minutes. After a flight of 195 hours, 18 minutes, 35 seconds - about 36 minutes longer than planned - Apollo 11 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, 13 miles from the recovery ship USS Hornet. Because of bad weather in the target area, the landing point was changed by about 250 miles. Apollo 11 landed 13 degrees, 19 minutes north latitude and 169 degrees, nine minutes west longitude July 24, 1969.

    Space Medal of Honor

    Astronaut Neil Armstrong received the first Congressional Space Medal of Honor from President Jimmy Carter, assisted by Captain Robert Peterson. Armstrong, one of six astronauts to be presented the medal during ceremonies held in the Vehicle Assembly Building, was awarded for his performance during the Gemini 8 mission and the Apollo 11 mission when he became the first human to set foot upon the moon.

    Armstrong died on Aug. 25, 2012, at the age of 82.

    See all statements on Armstrong's death Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, has died, following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82.

    Armstrong's words "That is one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken on July 20, 1969, as he became the first person ever to step onto another planetary body, instantly became a part of history.

    Those few words from the Sea of Tranquillity were the climactic fulfillment of the efforts and hopes of millions of people and the expenditure of billions of dollars. A plaque on one of the lander's legs that concluded "We came in peace for all mankind," further emphasized that Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin were there as representatives of all humans.

    Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson, a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, and a brother and sister.

    "Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time," President Barack Obama said via Twitter. "Thank you, Neil, for showing us the power of one small step."

    Armstrong's family released the following statement on Saturday:

    "Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati.

    While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.

    Armstrong's single sentence, though it was focused above the national divisions and quarrels of Earth, still signified unquestionably the U.S. victory in the desperate space race with the Soviet Union.

    Neil A. Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Purdue University and a master's in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.

    He was a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952. During the Korean War he flew 78 combat missions.

    In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA's predecessor, as a research pilot at Lewis Laboratory in Cleveland.

    Armstrong later transferred to NACA's High Speed Flight Research Station at Edwards AFB, Calif. As project pilot, he was in the forefront of the development of many high-speed aircraft, including the X-15, which flew at 4,000 mph.

    He flew more than 200 aircraft models. They included jet and rocket-powered planes, helicopters and gliders.

    Armstrong was selected as an astronaut in 1962.

    His first space flight was Gemini 8, which he commanded. He was the first civilian to fly a U.S. spacecraft. With fellow astronaut David R. Scott, Armstrong performed the first docking in space, with an Agena target satellite.

    Less than an hour later their spacecraft began an unplanned rolling motion. After undocking, it increased to one revolution per second. One of the Gemini's 16 thrusters had stuck open because of an electrical short circuit.

    Armstrong used re-entry thrusters to control the capsule, and after a 30-minute struggle, it was stabilized. Flight rules required a return to Earth after use of the re-entry thrusters, so the crewmembers fired retrorockets that sent Gemini 8 to a contingency landing zone in the Western Pacific.

    Apollo 11 lifted off on July 16, 1969, with Armstrong, Aldrin and Mike Collins aboard. Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module they had named Eagle to their historic landing on the moon's surface.

    "Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said, telling a tense and waiting Earth that men had finally reached the lunar surface.

    He and Aldrin spent about two hours exploring, gathering more than 50 pounds of moon rocks and setting up three scientific experiments. The next day, after 21 hours and 37 minutes on the moon, they fired Eagle's engine to begin the return to Collins and the command module.

    The crew returned to Earth, landing near the USS Hornet in the Pacific after a mission of just over eight days. President Richard M. Nixon was on the aircraft carrier's deck to welcome them.

    "This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the creation," Nixon told the three.

    After 16 days in quarantine to protect Earth from any returned moon germs, the crew went on U.S. and international tours. Millions greeted them as heroes.

    Armstrong later served as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the Office of Advanced Research and technology at NASA Headquarters. He resigned from the space agency in 1971. As a professor at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1979, he was involved in both teaching and research.

    He later went into the business world. Among other positions, he served for 10 years as chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc. of Charlottesville, Va. and later as chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company based in Deer Park, N.Y.

    Armstrong was a fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the International Astronautical Federation.

    He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space in 1985 and 1986, and in 1985 was vice chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. He also was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973.

    Seventeen countries decorated Armstrong. He received many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA's Ambassador of Exploration Award, the Explorers Club Medal, the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Harmon International Aviation Trophy, the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal, the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the AIAA Astronautics Award, the Octave Chanute Award, and the John J. Montgomery Award.

    APOLO XI .................PRIMERA NAVE TRIPULADA QUE CONQUISTÓ LA LUNA, HACE 40 AÑOS

    Hola amigos: A VUELO DE UN QUINDE EL BLOG., recuerdo como si fuese ayer que todo el mes de julio de 1,969, estábamos pendientes sobre el Primer Vieje Tripulado hacia la Luna por tres Astronautas Norteamericanos: Neil Armstrong, Edwin E. Aldrin y Michael Collins, en nuestros televisores de blanco y negro "National" observábamos la información constante de la NASA ; y también mirábamos al Presidente de Los Estados Unidos de América , Richard M. Nixon. Aquí apreciamos la imagen del gran novelista francés. Julio Verne (1828-1905) Fuente: google; escribió con una extraordinaria visión futurista la obra: "DE LA TIERRA A LA LUNA", y 64 años después de su muerte se hizo realidad ese "sueño", que cuando él escribió no había ni siquiera en referencias la tecnología espacial.

    Disponíamos de una fluida información hasta que llegamos al 19 de julio y todo indicaba que estaba muy bien y finalmente llegamos al 20 de Julio de 1,969, desde las primeras horas vimos con asombro el alunizaje en el Mar de la Tranquilidad del Modulo Lunar, llamado: "EAGLE",(águila) piloteado por Neil Armstrong y su copiloto, Edwin E. Aldrin; todos estábamos tan emocionados que creíamos que todo era un "sueño", o tal vez recordábamos la novela de Julio Verne. En efecto se abre la puerta de la Nave "Eagle" sale una pequeña escalera y empieza el descenso el piloto Neil Armstrong poco a poco baja la escalera y al fin pisa el suelo lunar y dice estas palabras: In English: "It's one small etep for a man, one giant leap for mankind".En español: "Este es un pequeño paso para el hombre, pero un paso gigantesco para la humanidad".

    Luego de los primeros pasos en suelo lunar de los astronautas: Armstrong y Aldrin, todos los televidentes quedamos atónitos y deslumbrados por lo que veían nuestros ojos. Recuerdo mucho en aquel momento me hice esta pregunta: ¿Qué sentiría Michael Collins, totalmente solo orbitando la Luna, mientras sus compañeros se llevaban los laureles?, y mi preocupación siguió así.....¿Nadie se acuerda de M. Collins?, ya que él es también parte de la hazaña espacial.

    La hazaña del descenso del hombre en la Luna, marcó mucha distancia en la competencia que en aquellos años tenían Los Estados Unidos de América y la Unión de Repúblicas Socialista Y Sovieticas, los norteamericanos tomaron la punta y nunca la dejaron, ahora son 40 años de ese gran acontecimiento, y desde este blog, felicitamos al pueblo norteamericano y a su agencia espacial: NASA y le deseamos el mejor porvenir en su conquista del espacio sideral.
